These tiny limestone flame flowers (Phemeranthus calcaricus) are a rare and amazing sight. They can be difficult to spot because of their diminutive size. These succulent perennials bloom for a few hours in the afternoon, and then they are gone. Luckily, the cedar glade I frequent here in Tennessee has a healthy population of these little rock stars.
Cedar glades are rare. The highest occurrence is in the Central Basin in Tennessee. These are areas where the limestone is very close to the surface and there is very little topsoil. It's very hot and dry in the summer, and only highly specialized plants survive in these limestone deserts.
I love wandering Tennessee's wild places with my camera.
